Richard Sweeney, DDS:
Dr. Sweeney graduated Magna Cum Laude from James Madison University with a BS degree in Health Sciences. From there, he moved to Chapel Hill, North Carolina where he attended The University of North Carolina School of Dentistry, graduating with honors in 2008. Following graduation, Dr. Sweeney completed a General Practice Residency at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. As a resident, he trained extensively with special needs, geriatric, pediatric, and medically compromised populations.

Prior to opening his Portsmouth Dental practice, Dr. Sweeney worked in a community health center in Dunn, North Carolina. Dr. Sweeney currently maintains an adjunct faculty position at the School of Dentistry in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
As a skilled Portsmouth dentist Dr. Sweeney believes in a conservative approach to dentistry. He is adamant about explaining all treatment options to patients and involving patients in every step of the treatment planning process. His goal is to promote a fun and friendly, yet professional, environment.
Dr. Sweeney and his wife reside in Suffolk, Virginia with their twin sons Carter and Jackson and two dogs Denver, Summer, and Patty; they expecting their third child in April. In his spare time, Dr. Sweeney enjoys spending time with his family, going to the gym, and learning something new every day!
